“I am sorry,” Bhavani Devi Apologises After Losing Her Tokyo Olympics Fencing Match

Bhavani Devi created history by becoming the first Indian fencer to have won a fencing match in the ongoing Tokyo Olympics 2021

During the round of 64 match, she defeated Tunisia’a Ben Azizi Nadia 15-3 in 6 minutes and 14 seconds. But her happiness was short-lived because she lost in the round of 32 match against French fencer, Manon Brunet in the women’s individual sabre match, which was held at Makuhari Messe B Hall Yellow Piste.

After losing the match, she took to social media to apologise to her Indian fans for her dejecting defeat.

She tweeted, “It was both excitement & emotional. I had won the first match 15/3, against Nadia Azizi and went on to become the first Indian Fencing player to win a match at Olympic but in the second match I lost 7/15 against World top 3 player Manon Brunet. I am sorry.”

During a recent interview with the Zee News, Bhavani said, “Every end has a beginning. I want to thank all my supporters.”

Highlights of the event

She even thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the sports ministry officials and the sports minister Anurag Thakur for all the support that she got during her journey for the Olympics. She was India’s only representation in the docket at this Olympics and with her exit, India sojourn in the event has come to an end.

On the other hand, Manon Brunet was already winning in the first two halves as she had beaten Bhavani by 15-7 and had qualified for the round of 16. Brunet being an experienced French player began the match on a good note as she had beaten Bhavani in the first round itself by 8-2.

During the second half, Brunet continued her top form and won the match quite easily. Bhavani did try to fight till the last and didn’t give up, but the match already slipped away from her hands. Brunet was already leading the match by 4-1.
