By defeating Italian Lorenzo Sonego 6-2, 6-3, Finn Emil Ruusuvuori advanced to the second round of the Vienna Open. While the fifth-seeded Pole Hubert Hurkacz defeated American Frances Tiafoe 7-6 (9), 3-6, 6-3 on Tuesday night to go to the second round of the Vienna Open at the Wiener Stadthalle.

The 11th-ranked Hurkacz will need to play well during the upcoming tour weeks if he wants to secure one of the three remaining slots at the ATP Finals in Turin next month. The 25-year-old won his first match in Vienna on Tuesday by defeating Frances Tiafoe, who was in excellent form. Today, however, he will play Emil Ruusuvuori, who recently defeated him at the Citi Open back in August. Hurkacz almost immediately avenged that loss in Montreal, but Ruusuvuori has required at least one set in each of their encounters thus far.

On Tuesday, the World Number 43 defeated Lorenzo Sonego in straight sets, giving the impression that he was in good shape. The Finn advanced to the semifinals of the Stockholm Open last week, defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas, the top seed, while also defeating Tiafoe. Hurkacz should be winning this match at his best, so it could be a wise idea to back the 23-year-old to at least take a set here.

Although Hurkacz had to put in a lot of effort to beat Tiafoe in the first round, but he never faltered. He hit 28 aces and 48 winners compared to just 11 unforced errors. With the victory, he also kept his prospects of qualifying for the ATP Finals.
