Prediction
The winner of the 2020 US Open, Dominic Thiem, will take on Hubert Hurkacz, the top seed, in the quarterfinals of the 2022 European Open on Friday.
Hurkacz had a bye in the first round and then faced Jack Draper in the second round. In the opening set, which the Pole won in a tie-break, nobody was able to break serve. Hurkacz immediately jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the second set after taking an early break, but Draper rallied to square the game later on.
To end the set and tie the match, the young British player won the tie-break. The majority of the third batch was one-way traffic. Hurkacz lost just one game in winning the match 7-6(5), 6-7(5), 6-1. He has already advanced to his tenth quarterfinal of the year, and he is still in the running to qualify for the ATP Finals.
On the other hand, Dominic Thiem easily overcame Michael Geerts 6-4, 6-0 to go to the second round and face sixth-seeded Francisco Cerundolo. He had a solid start and swiftly expanded his lead to 3-0. After his opponent held service to make it 3-1, the Austrian won the following three games to win the opening set. Following a lacklustre start to the match, Cerundolo turned things around in the second set. He twice broke Thiem’s serve when up 5-1 in the match, then easily served out the set to force a decider.
Cerundolo gained a 4-3 lead and was the first to go up a break in the last set, but Thiem promptly levelled the score. The Argentine was serving to equalise the score at 6-5 in the match, but the former US Open champion broke his opponent’s serve once more to win 6-1, 1-6, 7-5 and go to his seventh quarterfinal of the year.
Thiem is still cautious to use his forehand to direct the fight. The shot no longer puts his opponent on the defensive as it once did. Sometimes it actually has the reverse effect and strains him. Hurkacz’s life is more simpler since he doesn’t deal with these problems. The number one seed is expected to advance.
