The Astana Open got off to a strong start on Monday when World Number 10 Hubert Hurkacz defeated Francisco Cerundolo in straight sets with a score of 6-2, 7-6 (2). Surprisingly, though, the Pole is the seventh seed in this competitive draw. The 25-year-old recently lost to eventual champion Lorenzo Sonego in the semifinals of the Moselle Open, but his form has been inconsistent all season long. This is especially true since he came in second to Pablo Carreno Busta at the Canada Masters in August.
The World Number 43 lost to Sonego in the Moselle Open final and returned to work on Tuesday by defeating Tallon Griekspoor in three even though the Kazakh is the clear favourite at home and performs best on indoor hardcourts. In order to defeat his opponent’s comeback and win the game 6-0, 4-6, 6-3, Bublik had to dig deep. The likelihood of a tiebreak between these two top servers is very high, so adding one with Hurkacz to take at least one set seems like a sensible combo to help prevent the outcome.
