Hubert Hurkacz’s ultimate ambition is the ATP Finals in Turin, where he participated last year. He’ll need to do incredibly well, much better than what he did in Vienna the week before, in order to advance. Borna Coric defeated him in the quarterfinal despite his strong performance in the Austrian capital due of his excessive number of opportunities wasted.

Hurkacz has gone 40-20 so far this year, which is a reasonably successful record, but there haven’t been any really notable results. Hurkacz has been playing a lot of tennis lately to earn enough points for the Finals, but his performance has been patchy. Following his semifinals lost against Lorenzo Sonego at the Moselle Open, the Pole has advanced to three back to back quarterfinals at Astana Open, European Open and Vienna Open respectively.

On the other hand, Adrian Mannarino, a French player, has had a horrible season overall and isn’t playing well right now. The total record is only 31-31, although it was a little better before to this current streak of disappointing results. Given his overall success both indoors and on his own turf, it seemed odd that he lost in the first round of the Metz competition.

After losing in round one in Tel Aviv, he subsequently lost in consecutive rounds in Napoli and Basel. With a quarterfinal, Astana was slightly better. He is definitely struggling with both his tennis and his confidence, which won’t be particularly helpful when he faces Hurkacz, who normally gives players very few chances. However, maybe he will feel more certain about his chances of success if he plays at home in France.

This contest should be an easy victory for Hubert Hurkacz. Despite his recent disappointing appearance, he still performed significantly better than Mannarino.
