Olympics have always been a high-profile affair because of the appearances made by celebrity players and other people related to the glitzy and glam world. During the Munich Olympics 1972, Palestinian terrorists attacked the Olympics village on 5th September 1972 early in the morning. 2 people were killed in this massacre, and others were taken along. The demand of the terrorists was the release of their 230 Arab prisoners that were trapped in Israel.
Terrorist Attack At Munich Olympics 1972 Leads To Massacre
The opening ceremony for the prestigious Munich Olympics 1972 took place on the 26th of August 1972. This Olympic season showcased a total of 195 events and more than 7,000 athletes were there to represent 121 respective countries. The Israeli team was attacked by a group of Palestinian terrorists in ski masks, the terrorists entered the apartments of the Israeli team.
The Palestinian terrorists demanded the release of their 230 Arabic prisoners along with 2 German terrorists who were trapped by Israel. During this brutal attack, two people were shot dead from the Israeli team apartments whereas 9 were taken along by the terrorists to the Munich airport as hostages. In this massacre, five terrorists, hostages, and a policeman from West Germany lost their lives.
The terrorists belonged to the group Black September, their main motive was the release of their colleagues. After this incident, the Olympic Authorities suspended all events for 24 hours and the players were guarded for the next few days.
Munich Olympics Attack Revenge
When the terrorists reached Munich airport, open rooftop fire was done by police and crime agencies. In the rooftop fire, many terrorists were shot dead but unfortunately, not all hostages were rescued. The negotiations made in this terror attack were for a quite short period of time, the Palestinian terrorists seemed in a hurry. The games continued after 24 hours and all people who lost their lives were given a memorial service in the main Olympics Stadium by the International Olympic Committee.
