Holger Rune’s late-season surge continued unabatedly at the Swiss Indoors Basel on Wednesday as the 19-year-old defeated Alex de Minaur in the opening round with scores of 6-2, 7-5.
After winning his second ATP Tour title on Sunday in Stockholm, Rune carried on where he left off in Basel, hitting 26 winners to the seventh-seeded De Minaur’s nine in an 89-minute victory. It was the Danish player’s second victory over De Minaur in as many days after he defeated the Australian in three sets on Saturday in the semifinals of Stockholm.
After also reaching the final in Sofia earlier in the month, Rune has an 11-2 record this season on European indoor hard courts. The Dane is seeking for his first ATP 500 championship, albeit it would be his third tour-level victory of the year (after Stockholm and Munich). When he participates at the Intesa Sanpaolo Next Gen ATP Finals in Milan in November, he will be hoping to maintain his form.
With his victory today, Rune has climbed to No. 23 in the Pepperstone ATP Live Rankings, which is a career high for him. He began the week at No. 25, which was also a career high. With a solid showing in Basel, he might eventually break into the Top 20. His next opponent in Switzerland will be Ugo Humbert following his win over Jenson Brooksby 6-1, 6-4.
It should be mentioned that Humbert also doesn’t give up trying to return to the prior level. In the opening rounds, Hugo overcame Aslan Karatsev using Bernabe Zapata before beating Brooksby.
