Stadium History

The games for the FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup 2023 will take place in the Kalinga Stadium and the Birsa Munda International Stadium. When India won the bid to host the 2023 Hockey World Cup, the decision was made to build a new stadium. The government assigned the task to the Odisha Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (IDMO) with a 12-month completion deadline.

The government provided 35 acres of total land for building. The stadium is built on 15 acres. The stadium was built mainly to host the World Cup and to make the sport more appealing to watch and promote. India is hosting the Hockey World Cup for the fourth time, while Odisha is hosting it for the second time.

The Birsa Munda International Stadium is the largest hockey stadium in India, with a capacity of 20,000 spectators. While the Kalinga Stadium has a capacity of 15,000. Tickets can be booked here.

Stadium Construction Cost

The Birsa Munda International Stadium cost 120 crore INR ($16 million) to construct.

The 2023 FIH Men’s World Cup games will be held jointly at Kalinga Stadium and the Birsa Munda International Stadium. The competition will feature 16 teams representing five confederations competing for the title of world champion. Belgium is currently the World Cup champion.
