Hobart Neal Landrith, who is better known as Hobie Landrith, was born in Decatur, Illinois, on March 16, 1930. He played baseball in high school in Detroit before becoming a catcher in Major League Baseball (MLB). He played 772 games in the MLB over 14 years.
In the 1961 expansion draft, the first player chosen was Hobie Landrith by the New York Mets. On April 11, 1962, when the Mets first played, they lost 11–4 to the Cardinals. He was the catcher for that game. Before being traded to the Orioles in June 1962, Landrith played in 23 games for the Mets.

Hobie Landrith had a career batting average of .233 and played for the Cincinnati Reds, Chicago Cubs, St. Louis Cardinals, San Francisco Giants, Baltimore Orioles, Washington Senators, and the Mets. His best moment with the Mets was when he hit a two-run, walk-off home run off Hall of Famer Warren Spahn, giving the Mets a 3-2 win over the Milwaukee Braves.
Hobie Landrith’s special relationship with the Mets
Casey Stengel, who was the manager of the Mets, was said to be happy with the team’s choice of Landrith in the expansion draught. He said, “You gotta have a catcher or you’d have a lot of passed balls.”

Hobie Landrith wrote in a blog post that Landrith was one of the first players he reached out to upon becoming alumni director “a few years back,” and that Landrith told Horwitz he was the first person from the Mets to have called him “in over 50 years.” Landrith also said that he “always cherished his brief time with the Mets.”
Hobie Landrith’s family legacy: Surviving wife, children, family and more
Landrith’s wife, Peggy, and his six children, Gary, Carol, Randy, Beth, David, and Linda, as well as a few of his brothers, are still alive. His father, Xelpho Landrith, drove a truck and ran a business that kept meat cold. All of Landrith’s brothers played baseball, and many of them were pitchers.
Charles, Ellis, Carl, and Don were all his brothers. John, Bob, and Dale came after Hobie. Johnnie was one year older than the one sister, Phyllis. Hobie Landrith was the first player for the New York Mets, so his death is sad for everyone in baseball.
The former MLB star passed away due to natural causes. He spent the first six seasons with the Cincinnati Reds and also played with the St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago Cubs, San Francisco Giants, Baltimore Orioles, and Washington Senators as well as the Mets with his net worth between $1-5 million.
