She had been in movies and on TV for a long time, but Parks and Recreation made her famous as the sassy and smart government worker Ethel Beavers.

Deadline says that Slayton-family Hughes’s posted this on their Facebook page to let people know that she had died: “Last night, Helen passed away. Her pain is over, but her strong will to live on. Thank you for caring about her and supporting her work. Rest sweet one.”

Helen Slayton-Hughes Started Her Career In San Francisco

Her first movie role was in the 1980 mob comedy Mafia on the Bounty, which starred Jackie Mason and Joe E. Ross. But after a few small roles in the 1980s, like the divorce drama Shoot the Moon with Albert Finney and Diane Keaton, she didn’t show up on screen again for nearly 20 years.

In 2000, Helen Slayton-Hughes was asked to be a guest star on the Don Johnson cop show Nash Bridges. At the age of 70, she became a full-time actor, which was a big change for her.

She had memorable guest roles on a number of TV shows, including The Drew Carey Show, Judging Amy, Arrested Development, New Girl, two different Power Rangers shows, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and True Blood.

She also acted in a number of movies, such as The Onion Movie, I Want Someone to Eat Cheese with, Hesher, and Good Night and Good Luck. In 2011, she was cast as Ethel Beavers, a stenographer for the city of Pawnee, Indiana, on NBC’s Parks and Recreation. This role would become her most well-known.
