Though running backs led the way, the early success of running backs, halfbacks, and dual-position players who also ran the ball skews the figures. Football quarterbacks have won 17 of the last 21 trophies, demonstrating their dominance.
In 2020, DeVonta Smith became the first full-time receiver to win the Heisman Trophy and only the third receiver overall. He joined Desmond Howard and Eric Crouch, two wide receivers who obviously had different influences on the games despite their wide receiver classifications. Crouch was Nebraska’s quarterback as well as a receiver, while Howard was a spectacular punt returner.
In addition, Smith became Alabama’s third Heisman Trophy winner in school history. Individually, the Crimson Tide has had the most success during the last 20 years, having won all three of its Trophies since 2009. In 2009, Mark Ingram won the Heisman Trophy, followed by Derrick Henry in 2015 and Smith in 2020.
