Sam Allardyce relegation record

Sam Allardyce has quite the relegation record throughout his career having been relegated only once from the Premier League. Moreover, the relegation happened when joined West Bromwich Albion who were already in 19th place. In general, whenever “Big Sam” joined a struggling team, he has always left the club in a better place. Given below is a list of all the clubs that he has previously saved:

Everton (2017/18)

The Toffees are currently another team facing potential relegation and have appointed Sean Dyche to save them. Back in 2017/18, during a similar situation, Ronald Koeman who had an impressive first season collapsed in the second year.

As such, Everton sought a replacement and when they were unable to get Marco Silva, they chose Sam Allardyce. While the club were lying in 13th place and in free fall, Allardyce fixed things and led them up to eighth place, a position high which they haven’t bettered ever since.

Crystal Palace 2016/17

Back in the 2016/17 season, Crystal Palace were facing relegation problems under Alan Pardew. Sam Allardyce took over with the 13 games of the season left. Folwoing hsi arrival, the club won 7 games and engineered a great escape. He used defensive solidity to save the famously leaky Palace, who ended up keeping five clean sheets in six games in one stretch of the season.

Sam Allardyce’s most impressive escape job was with Sunderland in the 2015/16 season when he managed to steer the club away from relegation. When Allardyce took over, everybody expected Sunderland to get relegated. Instead, he pulled off a famous 3-0 win against fierce rivals Newcastle, and helped the club secure the 17th spot, just one spot above the relegation zone.

Blackburn Rovers 2008/09

With the season already well underway in December, 2008/09 Blackburn still hadn’t won any game in the league and were lying in 19th. Sam Allardyce came to the rescue and guided the team to a nine-game unbeaten streak upon arriving.

The club remarkably finished in 15th that season and even led them to 10th the next season. However, the owners sacked him with the club in 13th place and the cub eventually finished 19th and got relegated. Blackburn haven’t won promotion ever since.

Sam Allardyce comes to rescue Leeds United

Although Sam Allardyce has arrived to potentially save Leeds United from relegation troubles, it is interesting to see if his facing relegation record will come under threat. The club is currently above the relegation zone only on goal difference. Moreover, there are only four games remaining, with all of them against strong teams.

Leeds also do not have a good defensive record as they have conceded the most in the Premier League this season with 67. Sam Allardyce is certainly skilled in strengthening the defence, but with his first job as Leeds manager against reigning champions Manchester City, the stakes couldn’t get any higher than this.

If “Big Sam” does somehow manage to save Leeds despite the tough fixtures, it will certainly be one of his greatest records in his relegation record.
