Has Jorge Masvidal UFC Career Come To An End As His Record Dwindles

After losing three fights on the trot as his record worsens, many UFC fans are beginning to wonder if Jorge Masvidal is at the end of the line

After the most prolific year of his life, Masvidal went from welterweight journeyman to number 1 welterweight contender. The only issue is, after this glorious year, he has not managed to regain the same form.

Jorge Masvidal is one of the most experienced fighters on the UFC roster, with one of the most colorful fighting histories in the franchise, having been involved in street fighting from a young age. Videos of Masvidal surfaced on YouTube fighting in Kimbo Sliceโ€™s backyard, in which he defeated Kimboโ€™s protege โ€œRayโ€. Ray was far bigger than Masvidal, making this victory incredibly impressive.

Is This The End Of Jorge Masvidal In The UFC As Record Wanes

Masvidalโ€™s career has been full of ups and downs, as his professional record clearly shows. Heโ€™s gone on to win 35 of his bouts, but has come up short 16 times. Masvidal has often talked about his disdain towards judges, as the fighter feels that he was prone to be judged unfairly. While showing incredible skill and a never back down approach in all his fights, by 2017, he had never been considered a serious contender.

Masvidalโ€™s 16 month lay off seemed to be the secret behind his rebirth, or resurrection as he called it. In that time, he spent some time away from the sport, and even appeared in a reality tv show named โ€œExation Estados Unidosโ€ where the show focussed on finding and athlete with the best mental and physical capabilities.

Perhaps this was the type of change that Masvidal needed, as his 16 month lay off was closed in spectacular fashion as he faced off against welterweight challenger Darren Till. Bookmakers from across the globe, from betting shops in the UK, to Ontario Sports Betting outlets all favored Till as the favorite, and it was looking likely that their decision would be correct after a dominant first round from Till.

Midway through the second round, Masvidal unloaded a barrage of punches, and slept the larger and more dominant looking Till. Gamebred went on to beat Ben Askren within 5 seconds later that year, and closed 2019 with a convincing win over Nate Diaz in a fight that was ended by doctor stoppage.

His performances in 2019 shot Masvidal into the stratosphere, and earned him a shot at the title against Kamaru Usman. Masvidal took the fight on short notice, and despite displaying some impressive moments was bested by the Nigerian Nightmare. The fact Masvidal took the fight on short notice was enough for the UFC to schedule a rematch, which would see Masvidal get knocked out for the first time in his professional career by Usman.

In one of the most anticipated fights of the year, Masvidal then faced Colby Covington on 5 March 2022, and was defeated in dominant fashion by his once good friend.

This meant that Masvidal had now lost three fights in a row, which is enough for many to start questioning how much time he has left in the UFC. The truth is that Masvidal is one of the most well rounded and respected fighters on the UFC roster,ย  but the franchise has shown no mercy in the past when fighters fall out of form and arenโ€™t able to win fights.

Many fans are hoping that they havenโ€™t seen the last of Masvidal in the UFC, and are still eagerly waiting for a fight between Gamebred and Leon Edwards. Edwards, however, has his eyes fixed on a rematch with Usman. There are plenty of fighters in the UFC whoโ€™d line up to fight Masvidal, but fans and pundits alike would be disappointed to see a similar situation to what happened with Tony Ferguson.
