The groundbreaking British actress Dame Maggie Smith, who gained popularity for her leading parts in “Harry Potter” and “Downton Abbey,” passed away at the age of 89.
In a statement given to USA TODAY, Smith’s two sons, Chris Larkin and Toby Stephen, stated that their mother Dame Maggie Smith passed away “peacefully” early on Friday at a hospital in London but her cause of death wasn’t revealed.

Maggie was earlier diagnosed with Graves disease, an autoimmune disorder that can sometimes lead to serious complications including heart failure.
“She leaves two sons and five loving grandchildren who are devastated by the loss of their extraordinary mother and grandmother,” the siblings said in a statement.
Her son Toby Stephens has been married to Anna-Louise Plowman since 2001, and the couple share three children: son Eli Alistair and daughters Tallulah and Kura while Chris is married to actress Suki Stephens and lives in London with his wife and children.
Maggie Smith married actor Robert Stephens, best known for his roles in Century, Travels with My Aunt and The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes on 29th June 1967 and during their marriage they welcomed two children, Toby and Chris, before divorcing in April 1975.
She then married playwright Alan Beverly Cross on 23 June 1975, at the Guildford Register Office, and they remained married until his death on 20 March 1998.

When Dame Maggie Smith was younger, her parents used to tell her the lovely tale of how they had met in Newcastle while traveling by train from Glasgow to London. When she was four years old, her family relocated to Oxford. Ian and Alistair, her elder twin brothers, were born in 1928 and 1981. The latter attended a school for architects. Smith attended Oxford High School and then she pursued an acting degree at the Oxford Playhouse.
