He initially began his career as a chartered accountant with a focus on taxation. He later earned his law degree, began practising as an intern at J.B. Dadachandji & Co., and eventually rose to the position of full-time attorney there.
The Delhi High Court appointed him as a senior counsel. He was nominated a second time and declined the position for personal reasons after serving a six-year term with the former attorney general, Soli Sorabjee.
His well-known clients include “Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries Ltd., Anil Ambani’s Reliance Natural Resources Ltd., Tata Group, ITC Limited, Vodafone, etc.,” and he has handled some significant matters.
He has worked on the Kulbhushan Jadhav case on behalf of the International Court of Justice. India acknowledges that the victim had a valid visa and was serving in Iran when he was apprehended and taken to Pakistan, where he was given the death penalty.

Controversies Surrounding Harish Salve
- Citizens for Justice and Peace activists claimed in February 2009 that Salve was unable to serve as an amicus curiae in the Gujarat Riots proceedings because of his lack of interest in their complaints about the special team’s inadequate investigation. They were represented by attorney Kamini Jaiswal.
- Salve was accused of abusing his role as amicus curiae in the Gujarat Riots case, according to a 2011 story in Tehelka magazine, by concurrently advocating for corporations with state government officials who were involved in the inquiry he was supervising for the court. Salve acknowledged the accuracy of the article’s factual claims but dismissed the idea of a quid pro quo in an interview with Ashish Khetan.
