Madhya Pradesh, which already boasts an international cricket stadium in Indore, is on the verge of having a second one in Gwalior, currently nearing completion.
Officials from the Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association (MPCA) have verified that a delegation from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is scheduled to inspect the site next week.
If all goes well, the Gwalior stadium could potentially witness a T20 match between India and Afghanistan, initially planned for Indore. The last international match at Gwalior’s Captain Roop Singh Stadium occurred on February 24, 2010, featuring India and South Africa.
Subsequently, the stadium primarily hosted domestic matches. Following the establishment of the Holkar Stadium in Indore, MPCA directed its efforts towards constructing the Gwalior stadium, spanning approximately 30 acres and situated 8 km from the city off the Mumbai-Agra bypass.
Abhilash Khandekar, President of MPCA, affirmed that the stadium’s development is progressing swiftly, with around 90% of the work already completed.
Khandekar emphasized that the BCCI would make the final decision on hosting the international T20 match against Afghanistan, currently slated for Indore. Despite preparations in Indore, the uncertainty lies in whether Gwalior will host the match or not.
The Gwalior Division Cricket Association (GDCA) is optimistic about the opportunity to host an international cricket match after a 14-year hiatus.
Prashant Mehta, President of GDCA, expressed excitement about Gwalior reclaiming its status as a major tournament venue, lauding MPCA’s efforts and affirming full support from the association.
The international cricket stadium’s construction will unfold in two phases, with an initial seating capacity of around 30,000 spectators and a subsequent expansion by an additional 20,000 seats in the second phase to take the total capacity to 50,000.
