At the eighth round of the Open division of the 44th Chess Olympiad in Mamallapuram, Chennai, on Saturday, teenage Grandmaster D Gukesh stunned World No. 5, Fabiano Caruana, as India ‘B’ defeated number two seeds the USA by 3-1.

Gukesh is in the midst of a winning streak; his victory over Caruana was his eighth straight in the competition and raised his live ratings. In the live ratings, he rose to second place, trailing only the illustrious Viswanathan Anand.

Who Is Gukesh D?
Gukesh D or Dommaraju Gukesh is a well-known Indian chess player. He has recently been in the news because he won the 44th Chess Olympiad which was his 8th consecutive win.
He was born in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, on May 29, 2006. His father’s name is Rajnikanth and he is an ear, nose and throat surgeon. His mother’s name is Padma and she is a microbiologist.
At age seven, he started learning the game. He attends the Velammal Vidyalaya in Chennai’s Mel Ayanambakkam.
Presently, he is 16 years old.
His Career
Gukesh D won the Under-9 division of the Asian School Chess Championships in 2015, as well as the Under-12 division of the World Youth Chess Championships in 2018.
At the 2018 Asian Youth Chess Championships, he also took home five gold medals in the U-12 solo fast and blitz, U-12 team rapid and blitz, and U-12 individual classical formats.
At the 34th Cappelle-la-Grande Open in March 2018, he finished the prerequisites for the title of International Master.
Gukesh D came within 17 days of breaking Sergey Karjakin’s record for being the youngest grandmaster ever. At the age of 12 years, 7 months, and 17 days on January 15, 2019, he become the second-youngest grandmaster in history. As of 2022, he is the youngest one in India.
He scored 14 out of 19 points to win the Julius Baer Challengers Chess Tour’s Gelfand Challenge in June 2021. He started the 44th Chess Olympiad in August 2022 with an outstanding 8 out of 8 points, which helped to overcome the top-ranked United States in the eighth match.
Gukesh D received the Grandmaster title from FIDE in March 2019, making him the third-youngest Grandmaster in history. Gukesh reached a live rating of 2729 and entered the world top-20 and is also now the second highest-rated Indian behind only GM Viswanathan Anand. His net worth stands at Rs.50 lakhs.
