Wilko married his childhood sweetheart Irene Knight when they were teenagers and the couple had two sons together namely Matthew and Simon. Johnson was left alone in 2004 after his wife passed away from cancer. He attended Newcastle University.

After completing his graduation, Johnson traveled to India before returning to Essex for playing with the Pigboy Charlie Band. The band evolved into Dr. Feelgood, a mainstay of the 1970s pub rock movement. After returning from Goa, Wilko Johnson worked in 1972, for a half year as an English teacher.
Johnson bought his first Fender Telecaster from a shop in the Southend, Essex for £90 (equivalent to £1,854 as of 2021). Further, He used to play a vintage 1962 Fender Telecaster with a rosewood fingerboard which he bought in 1974. Later on, Dr. Feelgood signed one of the first record deals.
In 1977, Wilko was considered as the founding member of the Solid Senders with keyboardist John Potter, bassist Steve Lewins, and drummer Alan Platt. They signed to the Virgin in 1978 and released his album named Solid Senders the same year.
Wilko Johnson published his autobiography was co-authored with Zoe Howe and later was titled Looking Back at Me at the end of 2012. For his acting debut, Wilko Johnson was cast in the key roles of mute executioner Ser Ilyn Payne, in both first and second seasons of the HBO fantasy series Game of Thrones. This role came just after the producers had seen him in the Oil City Confidential.
