He also has one brother, Jay Berhalter, who was the Chief Executive Officer of the United States National Soccer Federation until he stepped down in 2020. Berhalter attended Saint Benedict’s Preparatory School in Newark, New Jersey. He went to the University of North Carolina.

Playing Career

Gregg Berhalter was a professional football player who began his career with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s NCAA soccer club. He played for Crystal Palace, Energie Cottbus, and TSV 1860 Munich during his 15-year professional football career. Later, he returned to the United States and signed with the Los Angeles Galaxy of Major League Soccer in 2009.

He also assisted the Los Angeles Galaxy to a 2-0 victory over the Houston Dynamo in the 2009 MLS Cup final. He made his international debut in 1995 and represented the United States in the World Cups in 2002 and 2006. Gregg Berhalter announced his retirement from the game in 2011.

Coaching career

Berhalter began his coaching career as an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Galaxy after retiring from soccer. In 2011, he was appointed head coach of the Swedish club Hammarby IF.
