American journalist Grant Wahl, who was in Qatar on Friday to cover the FIFA World Cup 2022, passed away. The former top writer for Sports Illustrated was reporting the quarterfinal encounter between Argentina and the Netherlands.

He fell back in his seat during overtime, according to reporters sitting next to him in the media tribune at the Lusail Iconic Stadium. He received CPR before being driven to a nearby hospital by Uber, where he passed away.

Prior to this, when the United States and Wales game was taking place at Ahmed bin Ali Stadium in Qatar, Wahl arrived wearing an LGBTQ rainbow jersey and was stopped for about 30 minutes by World Cup security.

As a result of this, his brother Eric Wahl claimed after his death that the Qatari government could have been responsible for the sports writer’s demise on a now-deleted social media post. Grant Wahl was a well-known American sports journalist. He has been in the news because he passed away recently while covering FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar.

He was born on December 8, 1974, in Mission, Kansas, U.S. He has a brother named Eric Wahl.

He did his schooling at Shawnee Mission East High School. After completing schooling, he attended Princeton University, where he earned a BA in Politics in 1996.

He was married to Celine Gounder, a well-known American medical doctor, and medical journalist.

He died on December 9, 2022, in Lusail, Qatar. At the time of his death, he was 44 years old.

His Career

Grant Wahl was well-known for being a former senior writer for Sports Illustrated and a correspondent for Fox Sports. His time at Sports Illustrated was mostly spent on American collegiate soccer and basketball.

He was also a sports journalist for CBS Sports and an analyst for soccer. In 2011, Wahl competed for the FIFA presidency, however, he later dropped out of the race after failing to get support from a football federation.

Additionally, he wrote the book The Beckham Experiment (2009). In 2020, he resigned from Sports Illustrated and started his own newsletter, Substack.

Cause Of Death Grant Wahl

On December 9, 2022, while covering the quarterfinal game between Argentina and the Netherlands at the Lusail Iconic Stadium in Qatar, Wahl unexpectedly passed out in the press box.

According to a statement made by Wahl’s wife, local paramedics arrived quickly and treated him for 30 minutes, including CPR, before taking him to a hospital. At the neighborhood hospital, he was declared dead.

While the specifics of Wahl’s death are yet unknown, he had complained of chest pain and sought care at the World Cup media center clinic, where he was informed that he most likely had bronchitis. At the clinic, he received ibuprofen and cough medicine.

On Monday, Grant Wahl posted on his website that he had attended a doctor due to discomfort in his upper chest. He wrote,

My body finally broke down on me. Three weeks of little sleep, high stress and lots of work can do that to you. What had been a cold over the last 10 days turned into something more severe on the night of the USA-Netherlands game, and I could feel my upper chest take on a new level of pressure and discomfort.

He further stated that he had tested COVID-19-negative. He added,

I went into the medical clinic at the main media center today, and they said I probably have bronchitis. They gave me a course of antibiotics and some heavy-duty cough syrup, and I’m already feeling a bit better just a few hours later. But still: No bueno.
