A total of 400 players from across the country have signed up for the Grand Prix Badminton League, which will hold its auction process next week.

The Karnataka Badminton Association will host the Grand Prix Badminton League from July 1 to 10. India’s top shuttlers including PV Sindhu, Kidambi Srikanth, Sai Praneeth, Jwala Gutta, Ashwini Ponappa, Chirag Shetty, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, and HS Prannoy attended the inauguration ceremony hosted on Saturday.
The players have also taken on the role of mentors for the eight franchises competing in the Grand Prix Badminton League’s debut season. Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medalist and co-owner of Bengaluru Lions, expressed her delight at the opportunity to become a part of the Grand Prix Badminton League.
Grand Prix Badminton League 2022 Teams And Mentors
The Mangalore Sharks, Mandya Bulls, Mysore Panthers, Malnad Falcons, Bandipur Tuskers, KGF Wolves, Bengaluru Lions, and Kodagu Tigers are among the eight teams competing. Each team will have ten players, with a minimum of five players from the state and a minimum of three women.
Each team’s respective superstars will serve as mentors to the teams. Chirag Shetty will coach the Malnad Falcons, while Jwala Gutta, who is also the team’s co-owner, will guide the Bandipur Tuskers. Satwik Rankireddy will lead the Mysore Panthers, while Ashwini Ponnappa will lead the Kodava Tigers.
The Mandya Bulls will be mentored by Sai Praneeth, while the KGF Wolves will be mentored by HS Prannoy. Srikanth Kidambi will be the Mangalore Sharks’ ambassador, while P V Sindhu will be the Bengaluru Lions’ mentor.
Grand Prix Badminton League 2022 Format and Rules
The League will be played in a round-robin format until the top four teams advance to the double-elimination stage or semifinals. Each competition will feature five matches: men’s singles, women’s singles, mixed doubles, men’s doubles, and a ‘Super Match’ format in which players can tag in teammates at seven-point intervals. For the first seven points, the match is played with two singles players, then moves to a doubles competition for the next seven points, and finally to triples for the final seven points. The tie is decided by the first side to score 21 points.
The organizers have also implemented a ‘golden point,’ which is worth two points if the server wins the point after revealing it to the opponent prior to serving. The opponent will receive two points if the player loses the point. Both players must use the golden point at all times during the game.
Grand Prix Badminton League 2022 Prize Money
The overall prize pool is Rs 60 lakh, with the winner team receiving a cheque for Rs 24 lakh and the runner-up receiving Rs 12 lakh. The semifinalists will each be awarded Rs 6 lakh, while the fifth-placed team will be awarded Rs 4 lakh. The third, second, and third-placed teams will each receive Rs 3 lakh, Rs 2 lakh, and Rs 1 lakh.
