West Ham tried to sign him on loan back in 2019 but failed to land the player. The following year, in the spring of 2020 and the winter of 2021, West Ham would make two further proposals. However, the third time is not always the charm.
However, Montiel wouldn’t actually make the long-awaited journey across the Atlantic until August 2021. Ultimately, Sevilla—rather than West Ham—acquired the former Copa Libertadores champion by signing Montiel in a low-cost £7 million deal.

His chances of playing internationally haven’t been harmed at all by his transfer to La Liga. Montiel has 22 Argentina caps, with nearly half of those coming this year alone. And while Lionel Messi and Emiliano Martinez were the focus of attention after what may have been the greatest World Cup final in history, Montiel’s contribution to this most dramatic of victories will never be forgotten.
His penalty, which was calmly steered into the bottom corner at the conclusion of nearly three riveting hours, put an end to Argentina’s 36-year wait for world dominance.
