For those who are unfamiliar with the situation, let us tell you, Goblin Mode is just a slang term which is used to refer to a type of behavior.
The term is mostly used to refer to the kind of behavior which is “unapologetically self-indulgent, lazy, slovenly, or greedy, typically in a way that rejects social norms or expectations.”
Most of these behavior traits are exhibited by many during the Lockdown because of Covid-19.
As per the official announcement made by the Oxford, they had chosen the ‘Word Of The Year,’ based on the public voting which involved over 300,000 people.
They noted that the word, Goblin Mode is believed to reflect on the “ethos, mood, or preoccupations of the past twelve months.”
For those who are curious about the origin of the word, let us tell you, the word has existed on the social media platform Twitter since 2009 and is now once again becoming a subject of memes after it attained a special status.
Although Oxford’s define it as a laidback behaviour, social media users are sharing GIFs, and Memes, which are anything but a lazy approach towards life.
Meanwhile many seem to share dancing, singing, and hyperactive memes, there are some who simply started posting images of Goblin, a fictional character which has nothing to do with the Word of the Year.
Let us remind you, the word has previously gained attention in 2019 when many took to search engines and started looking for the meaning of the same and started defying the social norms.
However, as 2022 has come to an end, the word has once again started swirling on social media as it is making headlines by several popular outlets.
The media outlet, The Guardian, in one of their reports, quotes about the word that, “Goblin mode is like when you wake up at 2 am and shuffle into the kitchen wearing nothing but a long t-shirt to make a weird snack, like melted cheese on saltines.”
Followed by The Times UK, the outlet noted that, “Too many of us, young and old, have embraced ‘goblin mode’, but the key to happiness lies in making a difference.”
