Triveni Continental Kings won the chess competition and were crowned champions of the first season. The winner was determined through three phases of tie-breaks. The winner of the championship was decided in a sequence of sudden-death blitz games, with the fourth game providing the deciding result after two rounds of fast and two rounds of blitz all ended in draws.

Triveni Continental Kings won the match thanks to Grandmaster Jonas Bjerre, a Danish player who is 19 years old. Bjerre overcame Uzbek prodigy Javokhir Sindarov, 17, in a gripping game. Bjerre, one of the tournament’s most inexperienced players who lost the most of his games, gave his team the vital victory when it needed. In a drawn-even endgame that the Uzbek player decided to force after suffering a run of four losses to Sindarov, Bjerre gained the upper hand and prevailed.

With this important win, Bjerre’s squad not only won the championship, but he also received the $500,000 first-place prize. Amazingly, there was a $1,000,000 prize fund for the competition.

Levon Aronian, one of the top GMs in the world, led the Triveni Continental Kings, which competed in quick, blitz, and sudden-death matches to determine the champion. Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, the 2021 World Blitz Champion, led the upGrad Mumba Masters. The winners had to take both matches in the finals, which were made up of two rapid matches. A blitz match would have been used to determine the winner in the event of a draw (each side winning one match). According to the rules, a coin flip was used to choose the colours.

Triveni Continental Kings won the first game by a score of 9:7 after turning around games on two boards. Levon Aronian defeated Maxime Vacheir-Lagrave in the match’s pivotal game after a tense and challenging contest. UpGrad successfully produced a comeback in the second game. They dominated from the start and outscored Triveni 12:3 to win.

The two-round blitz tiebreaks, where players had three minutes each and a two-second increment for each move, were set to decide the grand finale because both teams were deadlocked.
Even the finest players can make expensive mistakes in a flash when playing in a blitz game because of the pressure. Nevertheless, of the 12 participants in the finals, four had previously won the world blitz championship: Maxime Vachier-Lagrave and Alexander Grischuk of Mumba, and Levon Aronian and Kateryna Lagno of Triveni.

Triveni Continental Kings, who struggled as a club at the beginning of the League and experienced setbacks, ultimately won the championship. An outstanding conclusion to the Global Chess League’s inaugural season.
