2022 Gibraltar Darts Trophy Damon Heta vs Peter Wright Final Results, Score, & Match Summary
Australia’s Heta won the £25,000 top prize at the Victoria Stadium in an exciting final, capping off an exciting year of PDC European Tour competition. Wright, the world champion, led 3-0 after throwing some excellent darts, but Heta later pulled off a 167 finish to take the lead at 7-5. Wright won the next two frames to force a sudden-death leg, but despite being the first to the finish, he missed six championship darts over the course of three attempts. Before posting a double four to secure victory, Heta had missed four darts of his own in two attempts as the duo looked for the decisive blow.
Heta started his bid for the championship on Saturday by overcoming Chris Dobey. He then defeated Joe Cullen, the Masters champion, and German superstar Gabriel Clemens to go to the semifinals. He then shown class by defeating Michael van Gerwen in a thrilling match, scoring nine 180s while overcoming deficits of 4-1, 5-2, and 6-4 with legs of 13, 11 and 15 darts to get to the final. Wright defeated Ryan Searle in the third round on Sunday afternoon, Luke Humphries in the quarterfinals, and Rob Cross in the semifinals, all by an average of nearly 109. He also executed a spectacular 121 checkout of bull, treble seven, and bull in the second leg of the final, which brought the large crowd to its feet at the Victoria Stadium, only to agonizingly lose out on winning the match.
The top 32 players from the final European Tour Order of Merit advance to the Cazoo European Championship in Dortmund from October 27–30 as the Gibraltar Darts Trophy concludes the 13-event 2022 European Tour.
