Gianluigi Buffon is an Italian former professional footballer who was born on 28 January 1978 in Carrara, Italy. He was born to parents Maria Stella Masocco and Adriano Buffon and he has two older sisters Guendalina and Veronica. Buffon was born into a sporting family with his mother Maria being a three time Italian champion in shot put and discus throw.
His uncle Dante Masocco was also a professional basketball player who played in the Serie A1. Meanwhile, his father Adriano also practiced shot put, while his two older sisters Guendalina and Veronica both played volleyball professionally. Interestingly, Gianluigi is a relative of another Italian goalkeeping legend, Lorenzo Buffon, who played for Milan, Genoa, Inter, Fiorentina and the Italian national team.
