Shakira sang the tournament song ‘Waka Waka,’ which has over three billion views on YouTube, soon before Spain’s triumphant 2010 World Cup campaign.

Following the divorce, Twitter user @23ljk shared a screenshot of the 45-year-old pop superstar’s two World Cup-themed songs, along with the caption:

“Someone said Shakira has done more for football than Pique ever will.”

After being spotted liking the tweet, Pique has prompted a flurry of online discussion. In a joint statement released recently, the former couple, who had two children together, said (as reported by Sky News):

“We regret to inform you that we will be splitting up. We ask that you respect the privacy of our children, as their well-being is our first priority.”

The renowned centre-back has earned over 100 caps for Spain and has made 602 appearances for his boyhood club Barcelona.

In 2010, he was a member of the team that won the World Cup and the European Championships the following year. Over the course of his illustrious career, he won eight La Liga crowns, seven Copa del Reys, and three Champions League trophies.

Barcelona’s Gerard Pique’s future is in jeopardy due to the club’s dire financial predicament.

According to Marca, La Liga president Javier Tebas informed the Catalan giants that because to financial difficulties, they will not be able to recruit Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski this summer.

This could indicate that the five-time European champions would be aiming to reduce their pay bill soon. According to Diario AS, the 35-year-old Pique could be the first out the door because of his alleged £16 million-per-year salary.

The Blaugrana are confused about how to handle the defender after letting a club legend go in the form of Lionel Messi last summer. His current contract has two years left on it.

They recognise, however, that his high wages, injury issues, and proclivity to be “at the centre of disputes” make him a perfect target for dismissal.
