English Formula 1 driver George Russell will test Pirelli’s 2022-spec18-inch tyre in the Mercedes mule car at the Hungaroring
23-years-old Williams driver George Russell will be the test driver for the new 2022-spec 18-inch tyres in the Mercedes mule car. All eyes will be on him at the Hungaroring amid speculations over possible call up from Mercedes for the seat of Valtteri Bottas.
Englishman has been knocking on the door of Mercedes for a long time now and Everybody on the track feels that Bottas’s time with the Silver Arrows has come to an end after the Fin became the main subject of the crash at turn 1 of the Hungarian Grand Prix.
Formula 1: George Russell to get behind the wheel of Mercedes for the new tyre test
This test will take place at the Hungaroring two days after the main race as most of the drivers will be concerned over their seats in the Formula 1 going into the summer break. Meanwhile, George Russell will try to impress Mercedes challenging the seat of Bottas for the next season amid speculations.
George Russell scored his first-ever points for Williams in Formula 1 after an amazing display from both the Williams finishing in points after a very long time. He even shed a tear in the post-race interview where his emotions got the better of him.
Time and time Russell has shown excellent driving ability by taking his Williams into Q3 many times which is literally considered the slowest car on the track. Williams endured a pointless last season and were the last cars on the grid behind Haas and Alfa Romeo.
He needs a good car to showcase his wonderful driving ability and has the potential to become the next Formula 1 World Champion. George Russell joined the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport junior driver programme in 2017 and has since come a long way driving for Williams and scoring his first-ever Formula 1 points for Williams.
Valtteri Bottas future uncertain at Mercedes
Russell remembers the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix and holds it very close to his heart as he came inches closer to scoring his first podium in Formula 1. For the first time, he had a good car under his hands after Lewis Hamilton tested positive for Coronavirus.
Briton qualified in the second position behind Bottas but managed to overtake him in the first lap leading showcasing excellent pace and handling of the car. He was floating over the circuit so smoothly and efficiently destined to win the race.
However, a mistake in the pit stop saw Bottas’s tyres on his cars forcing him to box again losing the positions he made up. It was the day when everybody recognized the potential of the young English drive with a good car in his hands.
It might be interesting to see who will be the new Mercedes driver for the coming season after the conclusion of the summer break.
