Geoffrey Hinton, who is sometimes referred to as the “Godfather of AI,” acknowledged on Monday that he left his position at Google last week in order to speak out against the “dangers” of the technology he helped create.

Hinton, who is 75 years old, announced his departure from Google in a statement to the New York Times and expressed sorrow for his work at the time. Taking to Twitter, he wrote,
“In the NYT today, Cade Metz implies that I left Google so that I could criticize Google. Actually, I left so that I could talk about the dangers of AI without considering how this impacts Google. Google has acted very responsibly.”

Geoffrey Hinton attended King’s College in Cambridge, where he received a bachelor of arts in experimental psychology. He then enrolled at the University of Edinburgh, where he completed research under the direction of Christopher Longuet-Higgins and was granted a doctorate in artificial intelligence in 1978.
