Genshin’s gameplay team mechanics can be convoluted and a lot to take in on the first try, so we’ve tried our best to lay it out for you nice and easy. Here’s our Genshin Impact party setup guide.

Genshin Impact Party Setup Guide Build Around Your Favourite Character

Let’s not beat around the bush here, we all have a favourite character in the game. Be it because of their charming personality or their combat capabilities, we’ve all got one. As such, it would be so much easier to build around your favourite character than start from scratch with someone new.

Chances are, your favourite character is your best character. You would equip them with the best of the best to make them invulnerable. So, figure out their combat abilities and best elemental reactions with other elements to cause maximum damage. Then pair them up with the corresponding characters.

Once you’ve figured out who works well with your favourite, start building them as well.

Knowing Your Roles

Now, each character in your party would have their very own designated roles. You can’t have a team filled with main DPS roles, you need to have a Healer or Support onboard at least. You need to figure out who is better suited for each role. Namely, you should have a Main DPS, Support DPS and Support/Healer.

Your team should be made up of two strong DPS or damage dealers that work well with each other. The third character should be a Support character that could provide your team with heals as you go through battles. The fourth character should be your Support DPS that could help you put in more damage, defence or trigger elemental reactions.

Elemental Reactions

You have been hearing Elemental Reactions a lot throughout this article, and it can be confusing if you don’t know what it is. Elemental Reactions are the reactions of the elements when they come in contact with each other.

The world of Genshin Impact revolves around elemental abilities, each character has an ability based on the 7 elements: Anemo, Hydro, Cryo, Pyro, Geo, Electro and Dendro. The only element we have yet to witness in a character would be Dendro, but it’s definitely coming soon.

Here’s a list of Elemental Reactions that you can trigger when combining the elements of your characters:

● Crystallize: Geo reacting to Hydro/Pyro/Cryo/Electro. Can generate elemental shards that provide your characters with elemental shields and reduce DMG in battle.
● Frozen: Cryo reacting with Hydro. Frozen beings are immobile and rock hard.
● Melt Version 1: Cryo reacting to Pyro. Any effects of Cryo and Pyro evaporates.
● Melt Version 2: Pyro and Cryo attacks that trigger Melt will deal increased DMG.
● Overloaded: Pyro reacting to Electro. Causes an explosion that deals AoE Pyro DMG and destroys objects.
● Vaporize Version 1: Pyro reacting to Hydro. Effects of both Pyro and Hydro will evaporate.
● Vaporize Version 2: Pyro or Hydro attacks that triggers Vaporize deals increased DMG.
● Superconduct: Cryo reacting to Electro. Deals AoE Cryo DMG and decrease Physical RES for those affected.
● Electro Charged Version 1: Electro reacting to Hydro. Deals Electro DMG continuously until it wears off.
● Electro Charged Version 2: Electricity bouncing off Electro-charged beings that shock those affected by Hydro.
● Electro Charged Water: Bodies of water can be electro-charged by electro attacks. Those in the water will be damaged as long as they are in the AoE.
● Burning: Pyro reacting to Dendro. Deals Pyro DMG until it wears off.
● Swirl: Anemo reacting to all the other elements.

Elemental Resonance

A passive that can be triggered by having combinations of elemental abilities in your team. There are different buffs you can activate for the whole team. For example, having any four elements in your party could activate ‘Protective Canopy’ which increases your entire team’s Elemental and Physical Resistance by 15%.

You can find this Elemental Resonance Guide on the top right of your Party Setup page.

Upgrading Your Team

In order to have a super-strong dream team, you would need to keep upgrading your characters. This means ascending your characters, providing them with the best corresponding artifacts and weapons as well as levelling up their Talents. A lot of beginners tend to overlook levelling up their characters’ Talents, and this will cost you in the long run.

So yes, go do some dungeon runs and beat up some bosses or elemental beings. You need to put in a lot of work to make everyone stronger.

Choosing Your Members

The fun part. Like we said before, choose party members that complement your favourite character. If you are partial towards an Electro character, go for a Hydro character as your second DPS and vice versa. You would need members that could trigger elemental reactions in order to make battles end faster and deal the most damage.

Characters in the 5 Star category are the cream of the crop and you should definitely incorporate them into your party, but that’s not always the case. There are also 4 Star characters that are as powerful (if not more powerful) than 5 Stars. You just need to build them right.

Top 5 Characters For Each Role

These are based on the current update 2.2 if you’re looking for the best of the best characters. Note that you would have to build them based on how well they complement each other, these are just character suggestions.

Plus, if you’re a free player and don’t want to spend any money, sticking with the free characters and the Traveller is good enough. You just need to grind harder as you go along.

In order to get these characters, you would need to go through the game’s gacha mechanics a lot and pray that you have the luck to get some of them. But once you get them, you’ll be rewarded quite well. Especially after you’ve properly built them up.

Best Main DPS: Hu Tao, Ganyu, Diluc, Xiao, Tartaglia Childe

Best Support/Healer: Zhongli, Bennett, Sucrose, Diona, Mona
