HoYoverse confirmed the release date for Genshin Impact 4.0 update as August 16, 2023, during the 4.0 livestream.

The official livestream for Genshin Impact 4.0 took place yesterday on August 4, 2023. The livestream featured several details about the upcoming content in the 4.0 update. Fans who missed the livestream, can watch the recorded version on the game’s official YouTube channel.

Ahead of the release of the new 4.0 update, the game developers released a new trailer during the livestream event on August 4, 2023. The trailer runs for 5 minutes and shows footage of brand-new characters in action. It also depicts several environments, which the players can visit across the Fontaine region.
Genshin Impact Fontaine characters
The new 4.0 update will also feature several new characters to the world of Teyvat. Developers released a teaser titled ‘Overture Teaser: The Final Feast’ on July 3, 2023, to give fans a sneak peak at some of the new fighters. As of now, three new characters Lyney, Lynette, and Freminet, will be the main editions to the playable character roster. However, players will also get to face plenty of new Travelers in the new update.
4.0 Banner schedule
During the official 4.0 livestream, game developers HoYoverse, also revealed several new details about the upcoming banner schedule. Given below is a list of the characters set to feature in the upcoming banners:

Fontaine region in Genshin Impact 4.0 update
The biggest and most-hyped addition to the Genshin Impact 4.0 update is undoubtedly the new Fontaine region. The new Fontaine region focuses on urban life. According to HoYoverse, the water-surrounded region “offers a one-of-a-kind underwater adventure in some of its areas.” The developers have also added an underwater traversal mechanic. As such, “players will not run out of oxygen thanks to a special blessing granted to them but instead consume Aquatic Stamina when sprinting.”
Player will engage in combat underwater, with some characters possessing the ability to absorb abilities from aquatic creatures while battling. These new mechanics will help players when battling with the new Fontaine bosses. The new Fontaine bosses features a dancing clockwork meka duo, and a heavily Armored Crablord “Emperor of Fire and Iron”.
Genshin Impact 4.0 update events
The new 4.0 update will also feature a list of several new events. The first confirmed event is the “Mega Meka Melee” event where players will aid the local Clockwork Workshop prepare for a big commission. During the event, players will get to play a series of mini-games. Meanwhile, the second confirmed event is the ‘Verdict of Blades” event where players will fight against hordes of powerful enemies. Aside from these, there is hardly any information available about other events.
