Who was Gaddar?

Gaddar was a renowned Indian poet, revolutionary balladeer, activist, and Naxalite. He has been in the news because he passed away recently at the age of 77.

His real name is Gummadi Vittal Rao, and he was born in 1949 in Toopran, Hyderabad State (now Telangana), India. He was born to Seshaiah and Lachumamma. After completing his schooling, he attended Osmania University.

He was married, and his wife’s name is Vimala Gaddar. The couple also has three children named Sureedu, Vennela, and Chandrudu. He died on 2 August 2023 in Hyderabad, Telangana. At the time of his death, he was just 77 years old and was a Hindu by religion.

His career

Gaddar transitioned from Naxalite activism to ardent Telangana statehood support. Due to his commitment, he joined the Communist Party of India’s (Marxist-Leninist) People’s War and took up cultural activities there.

After escaping an attempted murder, he became an activist for social justice and took the name Gaddar as a sign of resistance. He promoted fair representation and empowerment for neglected populations during the Telangana agitation.

Gaddar’s enthusiasm extended beyond campaigning and could be seen in his music as well. He contributed his poetic talent to movies like “Maa Bhoomi” and “Orey Rikshaw,” writing vivid poems that struck a chord with his audience.

His creative contributions were acknowledged with accolades, including a Nandi Award for Best Male Playback Singer for his powerful rendition of “Jai Bolo Telangana.”

Gaddar’s cause of death

While reports said that he died after suffering prolonged illness, it is not known which kind of illness he had. Due to this, his exact is still shrouded in mystery. He died on 6 August, 2023.
