Lee Zii Jia exited the BWF French Open 2024 in the first round. Unfortunately, the Malaysian badminton star suffered a defeat against Magnus Johannesen of Denmark, losing 15-21, 19-21 in Paris on Wednesday. Magnus Johannesen, now advancing, will face off against men’s singles world No. 2 Shi Yuqi, who secured victory against the local favorite Christo Popov with a score of 21-14, 21-15.

In the women’s singles category, Beiwen Zhang caused an upset by defeating Rio 2016 Olympic champion Carolina Marín with scores of 14-21, 21-16, 21-17, setting up a match against former world champion PV Sindhu in the second round. Meanwhile, two-time world champion Yamaguchi Akane cruised to victory in straight games against Gao Fang Jie and will now face Yvonne Li of Germany.

Facing off against the 16th-ranked Michelle Li, who had also recently recovered from injury, Sindhu found herself in a tough spot. Despite losing the opening game and trailing 6-13 in the second, the Indian badminton player orchestrated an impressive comeback. Sindhu’s next opponent will be the 10th-ranked USA’s Beiwen Zhang, who defeated former Olympic champion and three-time world champion Carolina Marin to reach the round of 16.
