Former NHL player Rodion Amirov dies of brain tumor, cause of death, bio, age, stats, contract

Rodion Amirov, a former NHL player and a first-round pick of the Toronto Maple Leafs, passed away on Monday at the young age of 21 due to a brain tumor, as confirmed by the team as his cause of death

As per media reports, Amirov was diagnosed with a brain tumor last year and had been undergoing treatment since then.

Rodion Amirov’s diagnosis and battle with Brain Tumor

Kyle Dubas, the general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, announced the Rodion Amirov’s diagnosis in a statement on February 23, 2022.

Brendan Shanahan, Maple Leafs president and alternate governor, expressed the team’s grief in a statement, saying, “The entire Maple Leafs organization is devastated by this tragic loss.”

He continued “Over the duration of his courageous battle, Rodion Amirov’s positivity inspired everyone around him, and he made lasting impressions with our team and fans in his brief visits to Toronto. It’s incredibly sad to see a young man with so much promise taken from us so soon. We offer our deepest condolences to Rodion’s family and friends as we mourn this loss together.”

Amirov signed a three-year entry-level contract with Toronto in April of 2021 after being selected 15th overall by the NHL club in the 2020 draft.

Rodion Amirov’s talented hockey career cut short

Rodion Ruslanovich Amirov was born on October 2, 2001, and was known for his exceptional skills as a professional ice hockey forward. The Toronto Maple Leafs recognized his potential and selected him with the 15th overall pick in the first round of the 2020 NHL Entry Draft.

Rodion Amirov started his hockey career with the Salavat Yulaev Ufa development program in Russia. He then played for Tolpar Ufa and the farm team of the Supreme Hockey League, Toros Neftekamsk. He made his debut in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) during the 2019–20 season with Salavat Yulaev Ufa, where his talent continued to shine.

After being drafted by the Maple Leafs, Rodion Amirov signed a three-year entry-level contract with the team on April 15, 2021. He soon moved to North America and joined the Toronto Marlies, the Maple Leafs’ AHL franchise, for the remainder of the 2020–21 season.
