A Fire Department spokesman said that personnel at the scene determined he had died of natural causes and no foul play was determined.
On July 12, 1948, Milton Teagle Simmons was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, to Shirley May and Leonard Douglas Simmons Sr. He was raised in New Orleans’ French Quarter by “show-biz parents.” The 76 year old had a height of 5 feet 7 inches.
He attended the University of Louisiana at Lafayette before graduating from Florida State University with a Bachelor of Arts in art.
Leonard Jr. was the elder brother of Simmons. Their mother was Russian Jewish and worked as a touring fan dancer before becoming a cosmetics salesperson in stores; their father was raised Methodist and eventually held positions as a master of ceremonies and in thrift stores.
Later on, Simmons became a Catholic and went to Cor Jesu High School. Prior to earning a Bachelor of Arts in painting from Florida State University, he studied at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.
He was rumoured to be in a relationship with the Swiss adult actor Daniel Holt in 1992 but Richard was unmarried throughout his life and didn’t have any children.
Richard Simmons career
Richard Simmons began working as the maître d’hôtel at Derek’s, a Beverly Hills restaurant, after relocating to Los Angeles in the 1970s. He became interested in physical fitness. People who needed to improve fitness from an otherwise ill state had little assistance because exercise studios of the time catered more to the already fit clientele. He founded gyms and lost 123 pounds (56 kg) thanks to his passion for exercise.
I just got word like everyone else that the beautiful Richard Simmons has passed. I hope you’re at peace and twinkling up in the heavens. Please give my mother Mitzi and my father Sammy a big hug and a kiss for me. You’re one of a kind, Richard. An amazing life. An amazing story.… pic.twitter.com/gM1650BWnK

Later, he founded The Anatomy Asylum, a pleasant exercise facility with a friendly environment, emphasizing healthy nutrition in sensible portions and fun exercise. The company’s first venture was a salad bar restaurant named Ruffage.
In an effort to keep people healthy at home during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Simmons’s YouTube page was updated with old workout videos that were shot prior to his decision to step back from public life.
A representative stated that “Richard is very touched by the outreach” and that the decision was made in response to “an overwhelming request for Richard to return in some way as a comfort”.
An untitled biopic about Simmons starring Pauly Shore was announced in January 2024.
