With a record-breaking haul of 26 medals—11 gold, five silver, and 10 bronze—India placed seventh overall in the FISU World University Games 2023 rankings. The People’s Republic of China’s Chengdu hosted the 31st World University Games from July 28 to August 8.

The World University Games in Gwangju in 2015 saw Indian athletes win five medals; one gold, one silver, and three bronze; recording their previous best showing. India won four medals at the Naples competition in 2019; one gold, one silver, and two bronze. India has participated in the World University Games since their debut in Turin in 1959.

The 2023 World University Games featured over 230 Indian athletes. As many as 14 medals; eight gold, four silver, and two bronze; were won by India’s shooting team out of the 26 medals the country took home from Chengdu. Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar, a rifle shooter who competed in the Tokyo Olympics, won four medals at the World University Games, making her the most successful Indian competitor.

Manu Bhaker, who won a gold medal at the Youth Olympics, and Sift Kaur Samra both earned several golds. In both the individual and team competitions for the women’s 10m air pistol, Manu Bhaker won gold. In the women’s 50m rifle 3 places, Sift Kaur Samra replicated Manu’s accomplishments.

Indian archers, meanwhile, added seven medals to the total, including three gold. Women’s and men’s compound events, respectively, saw gold medal winners in Avneet Kaur and Sangampreet Singh Bisla. In the mixed compound team competition, Aman Saini and Pragati won the gold medal together.

India, meanwhile, won four bronze medals in the athletics competition. In the women’s 100-meter hurdles, Jyothi Yarraji set a new national record to take home the bronze medal. Bronze medals were also won by Bhavani Yadav (women’s long jump) and Amlan Borgohain (men’s 200m).

Priyanka Goswami, who had previously won silver in the 10,000m walk at the Asian Athletics Championships and the Commonwealth Games, led the Indian women’s 20km race walk team to victory. Yamini Mourya won the only judo bronze medal for India in the women’s 57kg division. It was the first judo medal India had ever won at a world university competition.

Hosts, with 178 medals, including 103 gold, China led the FISU World University Games medal count. With 21 gold medals out of 93 total, Japan came in second. With 17 gold medals out of a possible 58, the Republic of Korea came in third.
