At Chengdu, there will be a total of 269 medals up for grabs in 18 different sports. However, Indians are taking part in 11 different sports, including volleyball, badminton, tennis, swimming, judo, table tennis, and 11 different types of shooting. The wushu team had been scheduled to compete as well but eventually withdrew.

The 31st edition of the biennial multi-sport competition is now taking place at the World University Games. In wake of COVID-19, the 2021 edition was delayed. India won four medals at the most recent competition in 2019 hosted in Naples, Italy: one gold, one silver, and two bronze. The last three medals were in shooting, but Dutee Chand took home the gold in the women’s 100m.

At Chengdu 2023, shooters also helped India get off to a strong start with gold medals in the women’s 10m air pistol and air rifle competitions from Manu Bhaker and Elavenil Valarivan, respectively. On the first day, Bhaker finished the podium on top in the women’s 10m air pistol team competition, along with Abhidnya Ashok Patil, Yashaswini Deswal, and others.
