History of CONMEBOL–UEFA Cup of Champions, Winners, And 2022 Edition Details
The CONMEBOL–UEFA Cup of Champions, formerly known as the European/South American Nations Cup and more commonly known as the Artemio Franchi Cup, is an official super cup football match organized by UEFA and CONMEBOL in which the winners of the UEFA European Championship and the Copa América compete. It is a national team equivalent to the former Intercontinental Cup, which featured the club champions of Europe and South America in a quadrennial one-off event.
Before being abolished, the competition was held twice, in 1985 and 1993. Following the signing of a memorandum of understanding between CONMEBOL and UEFA, the competition was reintroduced in 2022.
Every four years, the competition would be hosted in a different location in Europe or South America. It was originally played in 1985, between the 1984 UEFA Euro winners, France, and the 1983 Copa América winners, Uruguay. The match was held at the Parc des Princes in Paris, and France triumphed 2–0. The competition was postponed four years later due to a scheduling conflict between the Netherlands and Uruguay.
Argentina, the victors of the 1991 Copa América, and Denmark, the winners of UEFA Euro 1992, met in the next edition in 1993. Argentina won the match 5–4 on penalties after a 1–1 draw at the Estadio José Mara Minella in Mar del Plata.
