For the third time in a row, the Netherlands women’s hockey team won the FIH Women’s Hockey World Cup. At the decisive game, the Oranje team defeated Argentina 3-1 in Terrassa, Spain.

Argentina made a strong start to the match, and inside one minute the South American players used a penalty corner to create two risky possibilities. The Dutch team did, however, take the lead after fifteen minutes. After a penalty corner by Yibbi Jansen became trapped in front of the net, Maria Verschoor smashed from close range. Frédérique Matla quickly increased the lead with a powerful backhand strike, which was her fourth goal of the competition.
After a great breakaway, Felice Albers gave the favourites a 3-0 lead in the third frame. Albers was thrown deep by Freeke Moes, and she hit a calm shot after Oranje had managed to elude the pressure imposed by the Argentinian players. Agustina Gorzelany of Argentina created some anxiety by converting a penalty corner fifteen minutes before the game’s conclusion. She caught goalkeeper Josine Koning off guard but Netherlands never again felt in any danger during this game’s finale and ultimately won the final comfortably with a score of 3-1.
