Freeke Moes’ fortuitous goal 12 minutes from time sent the world No. 1 team into Saturday’s semi-final against Australia or Spain. Belgium, playing in their first World Cup last eight, had rightfully equalised in the second half, temporarily casting some uncertainty on the Wagener Stadium faithful. However, success never looked assured. For the third game in a row, Frederique Matla was silenced, and even with 70 seconds left, Belgium was still catching late PCs. The Oranje had stumbled over the line after Stephanie Vanden Borre’s final hit had been dealt with.

It has been surprising that Die Danas have only advanced to the World Cup semifinals twice in 24 years prior to Tuesday’s matchup because Germany and tournament hockey are typically synonymous. However, Die Danas advanced to a third semifinal against either Argentina or England with a 1-0 victory in which they outplayed New Zealand for a brief stretch in the closing minutes.

The previous time New Zealand defeated Germany in a major competition was at the 1990 World Cup, and that trend continued as Die Danas took the lead on Lena Micheel’s goal in the 17th minute and kept it there. Germany completely dominated the Kiwis in the first half, at which time they also scored their own goal.

Prior to that, Ireland placed 11th following a lackluster performance against China that resulted in a 3-1 loss. Alyson Annan’s China finished their campaign in ninth place, which was their third-best finish at a Women’s World Cup. After yet another uninspiring lower-ranked encounter, China came close to producing an incredible lob to end the match that would have ignited the moment of the afternoon.
