Like in 2018, 16 teams participated in the competition. The host nation, Spain, and the Netherlands all received automatic spots in addition to the five regional champions. When the 2020 Summer Olympics were postponed, the number of berths made available through continental championships—including the World Cup hosts—was expanded from six to sixteen. After a barrage of 10 penalty corners in a five-minute third-quarter span, Frederique Matla’s decisive and timed flick—her first goal in four games—finally unlocked the door to a seventh consecutive World Cup final spot with a 1-0 triumph at Estadi Olimpico. After numerous attempts were charged down or kicked away by Australia’s outstanding Jocelyn Bartram, Matla scored the game-winning goal in the 42nd minute to set up a final matchup with Argentina and a rematch of the Tokyo Olympic final as the Oranje attempt to win their ninth championship in 15 attempts.
After a tense 60 minutes tournament favorite Argentina and brave, tenacious Germany were tied 2-2. Hence, Argentinian captain Moccia wheeled away in joy after burying the winning penalty and securing the ticket to final for Argentina. Argentina displayed accuracy in the shootout and advanced to the championship game with a 4-2 victory.
It sets up a captivating conclusion to the competition in Terrassa, where Australia will compete against Germany for the bronze medal. Later in the day. reigning Olympic champion Argentina will aim to dethrone the mighty Netherlands and become world champion.
