Uttam Singh’s team, starting the tournament strongly with a 4-2 victory against Korea, faced a setback against the strategically superior Spain. In a deviation from the usual closely contested matches between India and Spain, the 2016 junior World Cup champions appeared low on energy, conceding a goal in the opening minute. Spain’s rapid pace allowed Cabre to score in just 51 seconds, catching India off guard.
As India seemed to regroup, captain Rafi Andreas’s powerful drag-flick from a penalty corner extended Spain’s lead. Although India managed to pull one back with Rohit’s goal in the 33rd minute, Cabre quickly scored his second goal, restoring Spain’s two-goal lead. Despite India earning three penalty corners in the 55th to 57th minutes, Capellades thwarted their attempts. In the last minute, Spain earned a penalty stroke, seizing the opportunity to extend their lead.
Spain leads Pool C with six points from two victories, surpassing India, which currently lags in goal difference behind Korea, with both teams having secured three points each. Canada, the fourth team in the pool, has yet to secure any points after suffering two losses. On Saturday, India is scheduled to engage in their final pool match against Canada.
