FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup Past All-Time Winners List And 2023 Winner Prize Money
During an International Hockey Federation (FIH) council meeting in March 1969, India and Pakistan jointly proposed the notion of a hockey World Cup.
The inaugural men’s hockey world championship was an experiment, and it was a big hit. Nearly 10,000 spectators attended the tournament, demonstrating how the sport was expanding beyond its Asian elite. By defeating the tournament’s hosts, Spain, 1-0, Pakistan captured the inaugural FIH Hockey World Cup.
With four titles, Pakistan is also the most successful country at the men’s hockey world championship. With three World Cups each, the Netherlands and Australia are not far behind. In 1973, the Netherlands became the first nation to win the World Cup while serving as the hosts.

Even though the Indian men’s hockey team has won the most Olympic medals, its World Cup performance hasn’t been as stellar. Ashok Kumar, the son of wizard Dhyan Chand, scored the game-winning goal as India defeated Pakistan 2-1 to win the 1975 World Cup. The illustrious Balbir Singh Sr. oversaw the group, while Ajitpal Singh served as its captain.
Of course, India reached the final in 1973, but lost to the Netherlands and finished third in 1971. However, since 1975, no Indian ice hockey team has reached the semi-finals. India’s men’s ice hockey team is aiming for podium finishes at the 2023 FIH Ice Hockey World Championships. It will be the second consecutive year since 2018 that the World Cup will be held in India.
