On Thursday, India’s bid for the FIH Hockey Men’s Junior World Cup 2023 title came to an end with a 4-1 loss against six-time champions Germany in the semi-final, which took place at the National Hockey Stadium in Kuala Lumpur. India’s failure to convert 12 penalty corners became the crucial factor as Paul Glander (41’) and Florian Spirling (58’) scored in the second half, securing Germany’s ninth final appearance in 13 editions.

2023 Men’s FIH Hockey Junior World Cup latest results, India vs Germany score, & Semi-Final results
Ranked third globally, India initiated the game strongly, earning two penalty corners within the opening four minutes. Despite this, the second-ranked German team struck first with a field goal by Ben Hasbach in the eighth minute. India swiftly retaliated with another field goal by Sudeep Chirmako in the 11th minute.
The second quarter unfolded as a closely contested phase. Although India had several opportunities from penalty corners, they couldn’t convert any into goals. Germany received their first penalty corner in the dying moments of the second quarter, and Ben Hasbach capitalized on it for his second goal.
India started the third quarter aggressively and earned their 11th penalty corner with six minutes remaining. However, Germany successfully defended against it. Paul Glander extended Germany’s lead with a converted penalty corner four minutes before the end of the third quarter. In the final quarter, India made multiple attempts but couldn’t breach the German defense.
Despite securing two consecutive penalty corners in the last 10 minutes, India couldn’t convert, and Germany’s defense held firm. Florian Spirling sealed Germany’s victory with a fourth goal just moments before the game concluded, securing their spot in the final as India suffered a 4-1 defeat. India will compete against Spain, vying for the third-place position on Saturday.
Earlier in the tournament, India finished second in their group after a 4-1 loss to Spain but progressed to the quarter-finals after defeating Canada 10-1 and the Republic of Korea 4-2. India claimed the FIH Men’s Junior World Cup titles in 2001 and 2016. In the previous 2021 edition, they secured a fourth-place finish after losing to France in the bronze medal match.
