England vs. India was anticipated to be a battle for first place in Pool D, and the first half of the game confirmed that predictions were accurate. Even though the final result was 0-0, India will be quite concerned about the health of star player Hardik Singh, who looked to pull up with a groin injury toward the end of the game.

Teams in Pool-D started their second round of matches on the third day of FIH Odisha Hockey Men’s World Cup 2023 at the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium. The battle between the two top-ranked teams of Pool D ended in a 0-0 stalemate. England and India have a recent history of playing difficult matches with little to differentiate the two teams, and that was the case once again. Both teams had numerous scoring opportunities, but strong defense and lack of poise from attackers in important situations kept the score equal and gave both teams a point.

In the opening match of Sunday, Spain clashed against Wales, and both teams were in search of their first goals and first tournament points. Spain, who was considered to be the favorite, capitalized on key opportunities, scoring three goals in the second half to win all three points after scoring twice in the first. For the Red Sticks, Marc Reyne and Marc Miralles each scored a brace before skipper Alvaro Iglesias added the fifth. James Carson’s goal gave Wales, competing in just their second men’s World Cup game, some consolation from the defeat.

After their goal-less draw against England, the hosts are still sitting second with one match left due to inferior goal difference. To qualify directly for the quarterfinal of 2023 Men’s FIH Hockey World Cup, India must better England’s final day performance.
