Thanks to his superb run throughout the tournament, Martinez was rewarded with the accolade of Golden Glove in addition to his World champion title.

FIFA World Cup Golden Glove History, Format, & List of All-Time Winners

Since it’s inception in 1994, the Golden Glove is always awarded to the competition’s best goalkeeper. Formerly, the award was named after legendary keeper Lev Yashin but, the award’s name was changed to Golden Glove in 2010. Based on the player’s performance throughout the championship, FIFA Technical Study Group names the so-called goalkeeper of the competition. Although goalkeepers have their own prize, they are still eligible for the Golden Ball, just like when Oliver Kahn won in 2002.

Belgium’s Michel Preud’homme won the inaugural edition of Golden Glove, while French keeper Fabien Barthez won in 1998 thanks to his stellar performance including five clean sheets. In 2022, Oliver Kahn managed a rare feat, as he clinched both Golden Ball and Golden Boot reward. Later in 2018, Belgian Thibaut Courtois won the Golden Glove to become the second Belgian to win this prestigious award. Buffon, Casillas, & Neuer are the other legendary keepers to have won the title.

Following his heroics throughout the tournament, including stunning penalty saves during penalty shootout in final against France, Emiliano Martinez was rewarded with Golden Glove. During the tournament, Martinez managed to amass three clean sheets along with many crucial saves, which guided Argentina towards their title.

Following this glorious moment, fans have lauded Martinez with praise, as the Argentinian keeper went from playing in fourth-division to become world champion & winning world’s best keeper prize.

While the award doesn’t have a prize money, the winner of the world cup is given $42 million.
