For doing such vital work as officiating major events like the biggest footballing event called FIFA World Cup, the referees are also paid quite a good amount.

Since the World Cup in Russia (2018), the management organisation of the FIFA World Cup has made arrangements for each match referee to receive a base salary of $70,000 for their participation in the FIFA World Cup. FIFA also decided that for the first time in the competition’s history, each assistant referee would receive an initial payment of $25,000 for their involvement at the World Cup.

The pay for refereeing matches in the UEFA Champions League is at least three times lower than the pay for World Cup events.

Match Referee

The match referee, who controls the majority of the action on the field and is generally in charge of the game’s flow, is compensated with $3,000 for the group stage and $10,000 for the playoffs or final. A match official typically oversees two games on average, and FIFA adds their match fees to their regular salary. A successful referee who worked the entire tournament, including the championship game, might get up to $300,000.

Assistant Referee

Offsides, fouls committed near them or that the match referee may not have seen well are the main focus of the two assistant referees on each side of the field. They are paid $2,500 for the group stage and $5,000 for the playoffs/final, or, to be more precise, just a little bit less than the referee for their effort and labor. The assistant referees’ ideal scenario would be a $150,000 tournament payout.

Fourth Official

The fourth official is in charge of overseeing substitutions and inspecting the equipment of players and substitutes. During the game, they have the responsibility of overseeing ball replacement. The estimated total tournament payment (officiating up to the championship game) is $150,000, and their fee is the same as the assistant referee’s, $2,500/$5,000 each match.

Video Assistant Referee (VAR)

The advent of video assisted referees in recent years has been the biggest modification to football rules. The players that are chosen to compete in the FIFA World Cup 2022 will receive a match price of $3,000; later in the competition, their fee will grow to $5,000, with a $175,000 optimum payout for the entire tournament.
