Following their hard-fought 1-0 victory against European giants Italy in the final, Uruguay lifted their maiden FIFA U-20 World Cup trophy. Rodriguez, who was suspended for two games after receiving a red card against Gambia, scored a scruffy goal in the 86th minute to clinch the title for Uruguay.

When Fabricio Diaz was fouled by Matteo Prati in the 81st minute, referee Glenn Nyberg only issued a yellow card to keep the numerical balance. The Uruguayan players were resentful, but they were able to push that feeling to the back of their minds and find the winning goal. Rodriguez scored as the ball fell to him from yards out after Alan Matturro done an outstanding job of keeping it in a crowded box.

Cesare Casadei also received the Golden Boot award for his nine goals, which assisted Italy in reaching the final.
