The FIFA Club World Cup is set to take place next year under a new format with 32 teams and will now be played every four years.
FIFA Intercontinental Cup 2024 format
The new tournament will feature five matches before the final match between Real Madrid and the club that wins a series of qualifying matches. Notably, the qualifying rounds began with a match between the AFC Champions League winners, Al Ain, and Auckland City, who are the winners of the OFC Champions League. Following a thumping 6-2 win, Al Ain progressed to the next round against CAF Champions League winners, Al Ahly. However, this time around, Al Ain lost out 3-0 to Al Ahly.
Meanwhile, the tournament will continue with the next match between CONMEBOL Libertadores winners Botafogo and CONCACAF Champions Cup winners Pachuca. Fans have dubbed the highly anticipated match as the “Derby of the Americas.” The winners of these last two matches will then compete against each other in the Challenger Cup. Following which, the winner will face off against Real Madrid in the final.
Notably, the final match of the Intercontinental Cup is set to take place on December 18, 2024. The final matchday is also Qatar’s National Day as well as the two-year anniversary of the 2022 World Cup final.

Stadium 974 and Lusail Stadium have been selected to host the final three matches of the tournament. You can watch the match between Real Madrid and the winner of the FIFA Challenger Cup at Lusail Stadium, Al Daayen, on Monday 18 November 2024 at 21:00 (local time) on FIFA+ which will live stream all the matches.
As of 2024, there will be an annual FIFA club competition – the FIFA Intercontinental Cup.
