Following his 0.5-1.5 defeat against Magnus Carlsen, Indian youngster Gukesh crashed out from the 2023 FIDE World Cup. Meanwhile, Vidit Gujrathi also exited the competition from Round 6 after losing 0.5-1.5 against Nijat Abasov.

Although Gukesh managed to tie against Magnus Carlsen in the second match of their Round 6 tie, it wasn’t enough as Carlsen qualified for the semi-final after winning 1.5-0.5 overall. Meanwhile, Nijat Abasov stunned Vidit Gujrathi to reach the semi-final stage and now it is confirmed that he will face-off against Carlsen with a place in the championship match at stake.
In another Round 6 tie, Fabiano Caruana defeated Leinier Dominguez Perez using white pieces to win 1.5-0.5 and seal his berth in the semi-final. Elsewhere, Praggnanandhaa defeated Arjun Erigaisi using black pieces to restore parity at 1-1 and force a tiebreaker, which will be played on Thursday.
On Thursday, women’s bracket semi-final tiebreaker will be played between Nurgyul and Anna Muzychuk after their Round 6 tie finished 1-1 after two games. However, Aleksandra Goryachkina emerged victorious in her semi-final tie versus Zhongyi Tan 1.5-0.5 to secure her place in the final. According to the official schedule, women’s division final will be played on 19th August.

FIDE has confirmed that $110,000 in prize money from the humongous $1,834,000 prize pool will be awarded to the winner of the open bracket. Notably, the overall prize pool for the 2023 FIDE World Cup will reach $2,510,520 after adding the women’s bracket’s net prize pool of $676,520.
